Dog mess on the pavement? Probably not for long once Great Yarmouth’s intrepid street janitor gets on the case.
The street janitor is a kind of extension to the street warden service. In the first instance it’s usually the wardens who are either informed about or who discover a hazard on the pavement. They then call in the street janitor to deal with it quickly and efficiently.
No one, after all, likes dogs’ mess on the sole of their shoe – let alone being walked into their shop, business premises or home. Even leaving aside the potentially lethal health hazards it’s simply a nightmare.
"Town centre shops which are members of the Town Centre Partnership can simply call up a street warden and get something done about it," says town centre manager Jonathan Newman. "The borough council cleaners do an excellent job, but there are times when something happens on their round which needs dealing with quickly.
"Dogs’ mess is an obvious hazard, and it’s a health issue – but it’s not the only problem. Sometimes you get spillages. Someone might drop a carton of milk which splits and spills over the pavement. All it needs is a bucket of water and some disinfectant, but without the street wardens and the janitors it could left there going off until it rains."
