If you live in Yarmouth you probably know where the banks are – but for puzzled tourists and other visitors the street wardens offer a friendly face and a valuable steer in the right direction.
"The aims of the street warden scheme are to make Great Yarmouth a cleaner, safer and friendlier place, and when it comes to helping visitors they have a valuable role to play in making them feel welcome in the town," says town centre manager Jonathan Newman.
"The most frequently asked questions for the street wardens are ‘where are the banks?’ and ‘ where is the tourist information?’.
"The wardens speak on average to about 45 people a day. It’s not just tourists – they can provide valuable assistance to elderly people trying to cross the road. Sometimes vulnerable people ask to be accompanied down the criss-cross of dark alleys and roads between the car park and the town centre. The wardens quite often escort people back to their cars.
"The wardens are all local people. They were all born here, or have lived here for years, and if they don’t know the answer to a question then they know where to find the answer."
